Dutch historian Teun Tieleman, in his book Galen and Chrysippus on the Soul, explains that Galen viewed scientific facts as test cases for philosophical ideas. Therefore, Galen believed, if he could bring science to bear on the Stoic view of the monistic heart, he would win his point. Wise people are in want of nothing, and yet need many things. On the other hand, nothing is needed by fools, for they do not understand how to use anything, but are in want of everything.

Chrysippus, Greek philosopher from Soli (Soloi) who was the principal systematizer of Stoic philosophy. He is considered to have been, with Zeno, cofounder of the academy at Athens Stoa (Greek: “Porch”). Credited with about writings, he was among the first to organize propositional logic as an. the theory, centring on a critique of Galen's crucial evidence. His approach is based in part on his earlier study of Galen's aims and methods in PHP Books (Galen and Chrysippus On the Soul, ), and also on recent work by J. Mansfeld and others in charting the role of doxography in shap-.

The Philosophy of Chrysippus is a reconstruction of the philosophy of an eminent Stoic philosopher, based upon the fragmentary remains of his voluminous writings. Chrysippus of Cilicia, who lived in a period that covers roughly the last three-quarters of the third century B.C., studied philosophy in Athens and upon Cleanthes’ death became the third head of the Stoa, one of the four great. Galen is well known as a critic of Stoicism, mainly for his massive attack on Stoic (or at least, Chrysippean) psychology in On the Doctrines of Hippocrates and Plato (PHP)
